Joey was lying on her back in Naomi’s bed a few days later, blinking the sweat out of her eyes and trying to focus. Naomi had been teaching her how to wear and wield a harness. It had been a surprise when she’d shown up for their typical Friday. Naomi had a wrapped present with a huge purple bow on top, waiting in Apollo’s breakfast nook for her. In the box was a black leather two-strap harness and her first cock. Naturally, it needed a test run.

Naomi pushed herself off Joey’s hips, where she’d been kneeling, straddling Joey. “Definitely getting better. You moved very well with me, even though I was on top and directing the fuck.”

“I tried to keep up.” Joey wiped a wrist across her forehead.

“That’s the spirit.” Naomi lay down next to her, propped up on her elbow. “Okay, we’ve had my surprise. Tell me about your adventure.”

Joey felt silly laying there with her cock pointing at the ceiling, like a sun dial. She fumbled with the straps, took it off, and tossed it to the foot of the bed. The condom slid half off. “Joyce? It was kind of sad, really.”

“How so?”

“She’s this closeted, married Christian lady from some small place in western New York. I bet her name isn’t even Joyce. She wouldn’t give away any personal information. She was wound tight as a bowstring. Gave off that postal worker vibe, if you know what I mean.”

“Sometimes those are the best. They really crack open during sex.” Naomi’s eyes lit up. It annoyed Joey for a moment. That had not been her experience. The coldness of that shell Joyce kept made it like embracing a statue or a beetle. It had been like agreeing to a conversation, then having to do all the talking. It was an experience, to be sure, but not a passionate one. It was more the sad reflection of passion.

“She didn’t crack. She kept herself inside. Wouldn’t make eye contact.”

“She didn’t want to see herself reflected in your eyes. Was she rude to you?”

“Not abusive. Just thought I was too gay to function. I didn’t spend the night.”

“You sound angry.”

“Disappointed.”

“What did you expect from her? She’s deeply closeted. That has a way of crippling the soul, whether you choose it or not.”

Joey sat up and linked her arms around her knees. “I don’t know what I expected. Something more like making love, I guess. Some affection.”

Naomi watched her for a few moments in silence. At length, she said, “You’re not really poly, are you? You’re just figuring that out, and it’s confusing for you.”

“Yeah. I mean, I’m learning a lot, don’t get me wrong. I’m grateful. But I’m starting to miss being with somebody more than just in bed.”

“That could be good thing, Joey.”

“But it’s not like how you live. It’s just old-fashioned.” Joey set her chin on her knees.

“Nothing wrong with that. It’s always better to know that about yourself.”

“This is just a poly time in my life. I never expected that.
